Touring The Volvo IPS Pod Drive Plant – Koping, Sweden

Update: June 20 – Touring The Volvo IPS Pod Drive Plant – Koping, Sweden

Notes from the day…

We toured the Volvo IPS pod drive plant and R&D center in Koping, Sweden today and then will take a 3 hr train ride back to Gothenberg.

The tour was awesome as I was able to ‘talk technical’ with a few of the engineer masterminds behind IPS.

Train was great through beautiful Sweden countryside.

Another boat test tomorrow!

Visting Volvo Penta Pod Drive Systems

Nick Boksa, President of Boksa Marine Design was invited to Sweden by Volvo Penta which manufactures engines and drive systems for marine applications.

He’ll be meeting with Volvo Penta representatives, touring facilities and participating in various sea trials. The meetings began on Sunday, June 17 and run through Friday, June 22.

Volvo Penta is seeking to adapt their engines and pod drive systems to a greater reach within commercial applications. They’ve invited designers, architects and builders from around the United States to get a better understanding of the benefits and features of Volvo Penta systems.

Update from June 19:

Nick Boksa participated in sea trials yesterday afternoon with Volvo Penta in Sweden to test IPS 3 pod drives and Volvo stern drives on 3 different boats.

Per Boksa, “Very impressed with handling, speed and efficiency of the pod drives…also had an informative meeting yesterday to review the Volvo line of engines and propulsion systems available for commercial vessels and leisure vessels.”
